Open vs. Enclosed Auto Transport

Fisher Shipping offers both and open and enclosed vehicle transport to and from any destination in the United States. How do you make the choice of open vs. enclosed auto transport?  We hope this information will help you make the choice that is best for you.

You have probably seen hundreds of open car carriers on the highway in your lifetime. They range from single car flatbeds to 10 car haulers. The major difference between having your vehicle on a car carrier versus having a car towed is that the wheels are not touching the ground. We do not ever transport a vehicle by tow truck. Having a vehicle transported with wheels on the ground greatly increases the chances of damage or suspension problems. Most vehicles are transported on 3, 7, or 10 car haulers. These are some of the most common trailers used in the auto transport industry.

Enclosed car carriers look like your typical box truck with 4 solid walls. These types of trailers add another level of protection for your vehicle. These car carriers are generally the same size as a 10 car open carrier, but due to the restrictions created by the enclosed trailer they are in, cannot fit nearly as many vehicles. This is why this type of vehicle transport costs a great deal more than open car transport. Enclosed car transport will cost at least 50% more than moving your vehicle on an open trailer.

The biggest advantage to shipping your car on an enclosed truck is that you don’t have to worry about road hazards. Road hazards are objects that fly off the road and hit your vehicle during transport. Cargo insurance policies don’t cover these. Cargo insurance protects your vehicle in the event that the driver does something that leads to your vehicle being damaged, such as hitting a rail on the truck when loading the vehicle. A driver is not at fault if a rock kicks up off the road and chips the paint on your bumper. It’s not something that happens often, but occasionally it does happen. By transporting your vehicle on an enclosed car carrier, you don’t have to worry about this. If your vehicle has a custom paint job, you may want to ship it on an enclosed car carrier.

Enclosed vehicle transport is most commonly used for vehicles valued over $50,000 as well as classic or antique cars. We can transport just about any type of vehicle on an enclosed car carrier, but there are height restrictions with these types of trailers. Oversized vehicles can be difficult to move on these types of car haulers.

We have minimum insurance requirements for all companies that haul cars for us. These limits are based on the size of the trailer. The requirements for enclosed trucks are much higher than open car carriers due to the fact that the vehicles transported on.

Open vs. enclosed auto transport is your decision to make.  Whichever you choose, we will give you the same great service.
